WORLD BUILDING | Character & Environment Design
MASTERS PROJECT
While studying at UCLan, Broady’s primary focus was to further develop his skills in 2D digital art and visual design. The area that he concentrated on was ‘World Building’, a term used by writers and designers to help give their work a realistic setting and culture. In achieving this Broady took a simple narrative starting point, be it existing or original and designed a series of concepts that expressed that idea visually. He paid attention to the secondary and tertiary details within the concepts to give them believability and merit.
This was not a project designed to improve his foundational knowledge of art, it was a project designed to force him to think about the backbone on which great stories are told and how they can be translated visually. Through this project Broady learnt that without engaging in this process, design work lacked believability.
